Our two United States senators, Jon Kyl and John McCain, seem to be stuck in a negative rut. They were against the stimulus package, they voted against the repeal of the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell legislation, and they came out against the ratification of the START Treaty. Both senators have a large degree of negativity associated with them via their voting records.

Their only original “positives” seems to have been the “build the danged fence” and the “10-point immigration solution plan,” neither of which we’ve heard much about since the November election.

Whether we elect Democrats or Republicans, liberals or conservatives, males or females, we need to change the personnel representing Arizona in the U.S. Senate. Two crotchety, old and negative U.S. senators from our state should be replaced by people with a more positive outlook toward problem solving.

We need people in the U.S. Senate representing us that will propose, not oppose, solutions to the problems that our state and country face.

Doesn’t U.S. Senators Terry Goddard and Kirk Adams have an intelligent, positive and vibrant ring to it?!

Richard Meszar, Mesa

    Rich,

Kirk Adams is State House Speaker. He appears to have joined Russell Pearce in calling for removal of three choices for the Redistricting Commission who arguably are elected officials. The idea is elected officials cannot be trusted as impartial and might redistrict using gerrymandering to improve the re-election prospects of their friends and themselves.

Ok! When was the last time a Najavo Judge or any irrigation district board member stood for election on a party ticket? Absent partisianship, gerrymandering seems impossible. Heck, a "want to be" might be placed on this commission and work to gerrymander for those elected officials whose support he needs! Yet the census data leading to the award of another Congressional seat to Arizona is not likely to lead to anything directly effecting the Navajo Court, or any irrigation district!

This is all far too much to do about far too little. Adams and Pearce need to get a life! They both seem to be waisting their time on the public payrole filing law suits to protect nothing of substance! Is this what the 2010 election was all about?

Common sense being a prerequiste for elected office, neither "US Senator Adams" nor "Pearce" sound fit for duty. Possessed with common sense, Terry Goddard knows what he is doing. "US Senator Terry Goddard" sounds fine.

    LinMesa,

That's why I suggest Kirk Adams prove himself during the next six years before he takes McCain's place. Should he cotten up to Pearce and they play ball on the same party team, we can look elseshere. But just because he's a Republican doesn't mean he lost it. He might be cut out of the same mold as Goldwater and Buckley, not Rove, W and Gingrich.

My model moderate conservative is former Missouri Senator John Danforth. As embassidor he was the one who negotiated the peace in the Sudan. Remember Darfur? And we read today that notwithstanding troubles since, the Sudan is likely to divide itself into two seperate but peacefull countries, Arab Muslim in the north, African native in the south. The south has the developable oil reserves but the north must be the conduit for exportation. The Chinese are doing the developing, not Halliburton, thank God!

Funny, no one is giving Danforth his due.

Where have you been for the past two years? The whole Republican agenda has been to "make Obama fail" and to accomplish this all Republicans (with very few exceptions) have refused to vote for anything. You just don't get it, do you? The Republican party does not care about the people in this country, unless they are rich. They only care about what will benefit them personally.

I'm not so sure about Adams, but Terry Goddard would make an excellent Senator. Unlike Kyl, he's not rigid in his ideology and unlike McCain, he still has all his faculties. Plus, he's very smart. Terry, start preparing your campaign now!

    Nice idea Rich.

Are you sure that Kirk Adams is up to it? Isn't he one of the state senators who is consulting with Pearce on the Redistricting Commission? Or is he trying to talk some sense into Pearce?

I know of no living Arizonan who could do a better job in Washington than Terry Goddard. He'd do a better job this is Janet Napalitano. And Kyl's term is up in 2012. Goddard for US Senate in 2012. Rich said it here first!!

This will give Kirk another 6 years to prepare for replacing McCain.

Now for all of you neo-cons out there. Understand that being a pupular Democratic politician in Arizona idologically and philosophically compares favorably with being a moderate Conservative back east. We do not have Liberals in Arizona.

P.S. Rich, it looks like you can write good letters to the editor! Congratulations.

Dumb letter with dumb conclusions. Kyl and McCain are representing the CITIZENS of Arizona just fine. Hope Adams and that Clown, Goddard, run for the Senate. It will be another huge loss for them. Those two expect different results by doing the exact same thing - performing poorly in office and running lousy campaigns - isn't that the definition of insanity? Bring it on, clowns.
