This past Wednesday (Feb. 13) marked the beginning of Lent, the 40-day period before Easter, when Christians would abstain from meat and dairy products in remembrance of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting before launching his ministry.

Devout Christians who observe meatless Lent help reduce their risk of chronic disease, as well as environmental degradation and animal abuse. Dozens of medical reports have linked consumption of animal products with elevated risk of heart failure, stroke, cancer and other killer diseases. A 2007 U.N. report named meat production as the largest source of greenhouse gases and water pollution. Undercover investigations have documented farm animals being beaten, caged, crowded, deprived, mutilated and shocked.

Lent offers a superb opportunity to honor Jesus’ powerful message of compassion and love by adopting a meat-free diet for Lent and beyond. It’s the diet mandated in Genesis 1-29 and observed in the Garden of Eden.

Every supermarket offers a rich array of meat and dairy alternatives, as well as the more traditional vegetables, fruits and grains. Entering “vegetarian” in your favorite search engine provides lots of meat replacement products, recipes and transition tips.

Here we go again, another Liberal..."streatch".
First it was "Save a Cop by getting rid of assault rifles". Now we have the Vegans telling us that by not eating meat we are following "God's Teaching" by not eating meat and "Saving the Planet" at the same time....what a hoot.

If "God" didn't want us to eat meat then why did he give us canine teeth for tearing the flesh of animals and birds and edged molars to masticate the meat and mix it with saliva for digestion ????

Come on Liberals....you can do better than this. I just saw a TV program where it showed that underground currents of warm and cold water are what effect the Oceans due to the heat or coolness of the Ocean's surface. Man has nothing to do with causing hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes, rain or snow patterns. Sorry, Al Gore and Michael Moore....."the Truth will out".

If God wanted us to be vegetarians then he wouldn't have given us canine teeth for tearing the meat from birds and animals and edged molars for masticating the meat to help breaking down the proteins with the enzymes from our saliva.

Another bogus irrational "stretch" from our Left-Wing Liberals.

Strange, I thought Jesus blessed and fed a large crowd with a few fish and several loaves of bread?

He also turned water into wine ... and it was NOT grape juice as some " churches " try to claim.

    I know --- I was there [smile]

In May 2001, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratvinger sent a confidential letter to every Catholic bishop ordering that accusations of child rape by priests be handled “in the most secretive way. “ Anyone who went to press or the authorities, he warned, could be excommunicated. The conclave could elevate a cardinal from Latin America – where 42 % of Catholics live-or Africa, bringing “a fresh perspective” to an office long dominated by old white Europeans. “But wherever the pope comes from, he will need to embrace the realities of the modern world .” The church has a low tolerance for dissent, and will happily shed dissatisfied liberal believers in order to preserve its conservative core. Truth must have read a different column or just had "something" to say. Sort of. Another statistic, 5% of the population consider themselves vegetarian and 2% vegans. Interestingly, 6% of the US population thinks that the moon landings were faked. Just sayin'

Lent is the perfect time for abstain from the slaughter of defenseless vegatables. We should follow the example of Jesus, who created food out of thin air. Everyone should call for a "mana only" diet, until we can figure out how to become pure energy, without form. Until that time, devout Christians should simply starve themselves to death, and be welcomed to the sheperd's fold again.

It is a well-known fact that this addiction to food is the leading cause of that slowest of deaths, death-by-consumption...[whistling]

Men and women too, were created by God to eat meat. We have one stomach. We produce acids and enzymes to break down the protein in meat necessary for Human Life. Our teeth are composed of slicing teeth = incisors and canines, grinding and tearing = molars with sharp cutting edges to help masticate meat and mix it with saliva to start the digestive process.

If God wanted us to be vegans we would have teeth like bunny rabbits and cattle......[wink]

Seriously, if people want to be vegetarian or vegan, I say do it and be happy. Strangly, you don't hear to many meat eaters (you know the other 95% of the population) thrying to tell vegetarians they should eat meat. Do ya?

We must evolve faster and become like plants and get our energy from sunshine. We must not kill other living things, even plants.

Just soak up some sunshine ... walk around nekkid like the maker made us to get that sunlight on our skin.

If you want to call you self christian, at least call Jesus by his real name, Yeshau, Jesus was a name made up by a corrupt church, the Catholics.

Boy this Truth guy seems like the smartest guy he ever met. Strangly, the Bible has been together for a long long time. Oh, and Jesus named Jesus has been in there for a long long time. Astonishingly, our friend Truth is the only one who is now here to debunk 1000s of years of agreement to tell us Jesus really isn't his name. I will tell you, if not wasting so much energy on hate and venom, Truth may really be successful at something good for all mankind.

I've always seen it as Yaweh, Yahweh, YHWH, or Jehovah, depending on the context, which is usually the Lord God designation of the Trinity. If speaking of Jesus, the man, it's usually considered Christ--but that's newer translation, and a narrower perspective of the origins of Gods, in the first place.

Of course, none of this has really much of anything to do with the subject at hand.

It is mind numbingly obvious that the world would be better off if people ate less meat. There really is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

Excess meat consumption (which is what most Americans do by about an order of magnitude) is unhealthy and inefficient.
