Letter: Area sheriffs in media for wrong reasons

How do we get so lucky to have not one but two Sheriffs that somehow get into the National Media for all the wrong reasons. Yes folks we have Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has news conferences about the “birther issue,” his posse and his racist raids.

Then from Pinal County we have Sheriff Babeu. How can we forget his escapades with his former lover that he threatened with deportation, if he disclosed their relationship. Then last week Sheriff Babeu somehow decides he is going send a Letter to the President and tell him how he is not going to abide by any Orders from the President on gun control.

Stating the President does not have a constitutional right to issue executive orders. Then he caps off his embarrassment by spelling the President’s first name wrong (Barak). It has become quite entertaining here in Arizona to see two sheriffs of two large counties continue to make fools of themselves on the national stage. It is also very sad that our state has to take the brunt of most jokes and embarrassments because we keep electing these entertainers for all the wrong reasons.

Arpaio's smart enough to avoid tough media, but not Babeu. He's so egotistical he'll show up anywhere.

"Anywhere" last week being the Al Sharpton Show (it takes a con man to know a con man, eh?).

When Sharpton questioned Babeu about his letter, Babeu couldn't identify a single act the President's taken to restrict gun ownership. He couldn't cite a single executive action the President announced that was unconstitutional. And he admitted that if Congress passed a bill into law, it would be constitutional (save for some challenge in the courts).

In other words, a complete repudiation of his own letter, a self-immolation on national TV. And he ends up smiling!

    What a knucklehead.

    Here's the video for it -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g1XpDCq-Dzs

    It's hilarious.

And yet there areas of responsibility for these sheriff's have lowering crime rates. You would think that these two counties would be in chaos according to this letter, which wasn't signed. This letter must be from the organization that is trying to recall Sheriff Joe. We hear you Randy, but we still pay no attention to you.

Go Sheriff Joe, enforce all the laws all the time.

Mike, The picture of Babeu in front of the mirror with his tattoos exposed is worth more than a thousand words.

Babeu and Arpaio are both better qualified as showmen than as lawmen, but to be fair, the press had been reporting that Obama was considering executive orders that would have been unconstitutional. Fortunately, he had the sense to back away.

Given the number of times our "Constitutional scholar" President has been overturned by Federal Courts, it wouldn't have been a surprise to anybody.

The former Archbishop of Los Angeles, Cardinal Roger M. Mahony, and other senior clergymen conspired to protect pedophile priests from prosecution through out the 1980s, previously confidential church documents have revealed. The archdiocese sent abusive clergy to treatment facilities out of state-largely because therapists in California were legally obligated to report evidence of child molestation to the police. In one 1987 case, Mahony's advisor, Monsignor Thomas Curry, suggested that they send a predator priest to “a lawyer who is also a psychiatrist,” to put reports “under the protection of privilege.” Mahony, who retired in 2011, apologized and said he had been naïve about the “full and lasting impact these horrible acts” would have on victims. A victims' group called for Mahony to be criminally prosecuted.

Nobody wants to return to the Bush era, of course, when “the world's policemen was a little to like a trigger-happy character from a SWAT movie.” The Times (U.K.).

The East Valley Tribune has lost any shred of credibility that it had left when the Editor allowed this Letter to be published without the mandatory name of the author.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Sheriff Paul Babeu both served their Nation in the United States Army which is more that 90% of the eligible males who live in the East Valley. Instead of coming to the Defence of their Nation, they made someone else go in their place by taking a "Mission Deferment". Now these cowards are trying to recall Sheriff Joe Arpaio, an American Patriot.

Ateam1: I would bet that the first hundred or so responses to the article about " tough but fair immigration policy " pointed out that we ALREADY have a tough but fair immigration policy. And, that tens of thousands of people manage to come here LEGALLY every year.

But, the E.V.T and the other media in the nation don't want to hear that. They want to hear about open borders and allowing illegals to bring their whole family here to work cheaper than legal American workers.

There has been an intense campaign over the last 10 years or so by ALL media operated by Republican owned conglomerates to publish sympathy stories about illegals with all the emotional garbage about why they should be allowed to stay. " only trying to make a better life for their families " so, of course, it is perfectly ok for invaders to break any laws they don't like. However, it is NOT okay for me to rob a bank to " make a better life for my family ". As a legal American citizen I am required to follow the law(s).
Invading aliens are given a pass. And amnesty if the Republicans and - some - Liberals have their way.

SPAM FILTER ALERT: I have discovered that having more than five paragraphs will trigger the spam filter.

Also I had to put periods between the letters of E.V.T or it would not take the post.

The name of the reader who submitted this letter was inadvertently omitted in the original online posting, but did appear correctly in the Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 print edition of the Tribune. Our apologies.

Also, a note on commenting: Tribune staff does not "remove comments." We have a self-policing system that requires all readers and those commenting to act responsibly when conversing with fellow readers. Comments automatically come off the site when reported enough times by fellow readers. Regrettably, this often means comments that are not offensive or that should not come off the site end up removed.

We are working to fix this; first, we are aggressively evaluating readers who excessively report other comments as offensive or spam -- basically trying to beat the system. If anyone is found abusing this process, they will be banned from commenting at EastValleyTribune.com.

Secondly, we are looking into more functional commenting tools to keep this from happening.

The Tribune staff attempts to review all "reported" comments on a timely basis, but the rampant abuse of the "report" function has made this near impossible. That is the reason for our review of all who excessively -- and incorrectly -- report other comments.

Thank you all for reading and participating. We appreciate the interaction and feedback.

The title of the article should be, "Area sheriffs in "law enforcement" for wrong reasons.
An 80 year old senile buffoon and a gay, vindictive exhibitionist do not belong in law enforcement.
Or, any other form of public office.

Recognizing that Arpaio is a really lousy Sheriff does not necessarily mean that you're in favor of illegal immigration. I would love to see the border secured, and I don't cry for families torn apart by deportation, but Joe's politically motivated show raids are far from being an effective immigration control measure. In fact, they're counter-productive, since his bluster simply fuels his opponents.

Joe is nothing more than a political huckster, surviving in office only because there's an Arpaio supporter born every minute.

The underlying problem is that we elect our Sheriffs, meaning that, just as in our other elected officials, we get people who are good at manipulating public opinion, rather than actually being qualified.

    bfera,
One feature this forum could really use, is the ignore one. I, for one, would like to be able to use that, because of some posters whom I'd rather not see, but I don't want them banned, since one man's abhorrence could be another's entertainment.

BTW, thanks for posting, could you please tell us about the spam notice thing, so that we can stop seeing it, or just what constitutes spam? It's annoyed just about all who post here...right, guys (and others)?

    Thanks...

ATEAM1" Please Explain These Issuse! I could go on.!!! " Thats from your post on sat Feb 2 in case you did't recognize it. Seems to me you and your hero Sheriff Babeu need some Spelling classes.! Then maybe you can be allowed in to make your Extreme Right wing Comments like "You seem to be a LIBERAL FANATIC that welcomes Illegal's , abortion, gay marriage,Obamacare, socialist government,16 trillion and rising in debt, OH and GUN CONTROL?" (your quote)

Which is all the particular reasons you and the Republican extremest LOST the last election so bad. I know Mr Ateam1 it hurts so bad that all of the issues you want so bad to go away such as Immigration Reform is now being talked about even by your ever so friendly Republican heros like John Mc Cain and Jeff Flake. The problem with people like you is you are digging for all the issues that are now on the Radar of the Right Wing to maybe compromise on. If you don't you mr ATeam1 and your Republican party will continue to loose BIG in coming elections.

VofReason, I don't like the Obama administration either, but what in the holy name of Goldwater does that have to do with the morons we have as Sheriffs?

You've really got to try to stop thinking of every issue as Right vs Left or Republican vs Democrat.

Yes, thank you for bringing me back from the edge. Maybe we should talk specifically about terms like "racist raids" in the above. Maybe the Sheriff can round up the Scandinavian illegal immigrants that congregate on street corners and build city enclaves where no one seems to have a valid ID. That may prove that Arpaio is a great guy like fill in the blank politician for "Comprehensive Immigration reform" wink wink. Then I don't think I need to go through Government 101, but I think Sheriff Babeu said he wouldn't abide by something that the President waved his wand and proclaimed to be a new rule. I will agree, both these guys do things that are a little scetchy, but our friend the writer speaks as though their biggest infractions are not bowing to barrack the King.

Perhaps a bit immature slapping back, but reread the submission by the author. Any chance he isn't pulling up on one side? You think people are re electing them again and again for their entertainment value? If they are morons as you say, why do you think they keep getting elected? Is it because the overwhelming majority of voters are morons too? Or because they believe they are good sheriffs.
