The only consideration I would give to someone running for President, with regard to military matters, would be their capability to exhaust all other methods/strategies, before calling out the troops. And then, I'd look at what their intent would be, for the ones returning from conflicts--alive, wounded, and dead.
Having grown up, in the military, I don't begrudge anyone who chooses not to serve, in that way. There are many ways to serve our country, and many ways to be of service to humankind, as well...hopefully, and with luck, we may someday see people who have done, or wish to do both, running for office.
