Congressman Schweikert’s heart is in the right place. He deserves credit for trying to save the taxpayer money. But his dollar coin bill is simply not a realistic solution to our economic woes. The money saved is not that much, and the American people are just not going to switch to all coins. There is a reason that there is over one billion dollars worth of coins sitting in the treasury gaining dust.
Nobody wants them! I have to think that the money saved by switching to dollar coins will probably be offset by the massive ad campaign urging Americans to make the switch. I applaud Congressman Schweikert for thinking outside the box, but this idea is not going to solve anything.

Its fairly obvious that a lot of folks aren't interested in the government saving money. How about if our wonderful leaders got some fortitued and have the goverment quit printing paper dollar bills, and start pulling them out of circulation and replaced them with coin dollars. My,my,what would the poor folks do?

Have you ever traveled to a country where they use one dollar coins? Try carrying a pocket full of them for a while. Better yet, if you are going to do it for one dollar denominations go the whole nine yards and coin all denominations. Try packing your money around in a rucksack. I am sure you would like to do away with pennies as well. In many countries, they just eliminated them and you get to pay five cents for what previously would have been priced as say $1.99, $1.98, $1.97. $1.96 etc. Personally, I will stick to paper money.

Congressman Schweikert where are the jobs? Since you began your career in Congress in January you have done NOTHING to create jobs for Americans. WE NEED JOBS, not your diversionary tactics to start discussions on made up issues like whether we should have a paper or metal dollar.

Hey wait a minute here, Guys.
If we produce silver dollars, we will get more jobs in Western Montana and Northern Idaho mining silver! Isn't that a shovel ready job?

On a serious note, in the early 60's I visited my aunt and uncle in Missoula. My cousin Mary and I, together with her friends, went to see "West Side Story." While waiting in line to purchase our tickets, I pulled out a $5 bill. My cousin snatched it from me, giving me 5 silver dollars. No one liked carrying around all of that weight in their purses and pockets. In those days Montana prohibited the Bureau of Printing and Engraving from distributing $1 bills in the state, this in their effort to promote silver mining in their state.
So Bill, I have known for 50 years that people do not like silver dollars.
