Okay, I don’t live in Legislative District 18, but that doesn’t mean I’m not deeply affected by the possible recall of our Senate president and the contemptible, outsider intrusion into our state. Don’t kid yourself, District 18 voters: There are those who want to force a major shift in Arizona’s political base and away from policies of citizen protection. And, they are using you.
I implore you to reconsider.
Clearly, the Democratic party wants to see Sen. Russell Pearce defeated. I can understand that. But those of his own party, who have been sucked into the game of an expensive recall one short year away from a fully funded general election are staggeringly ignorant.
This recall is a game of dangerous proportions, one that has scammed multiple Republicans, many respected in District 18.
It’s one thing that a possible million dollars have been spent in this recall, (told to Pearce by Arizona Congressman Trent Franks) — much of it said to be from outside of Arizona; it’s another when our own citizens are blinded to hype and political carping.
I have a few questions for those, in Arizona, who have contributed to the recall effort: Really? You are unhappy with a strong legislative leader who took Arizona out of the red and into the black in a time the nation is floundering economically? A leader whose state is currently number two in job growth, from number 49 in the nation when the recession began?
Let’s go back to the primary issue: SB1070, which mandates aliens carry required documents. Through Pearce’s leadership, Arizona has led the nation in finally claiming state’s rights and taking the steps to protect its own citizens. Following Arizona’s example, some 30 other states are creating similar legislation. Our governor tells of standing ovations as she travels this nation. American citizens clearly respect Arizona’s courage.
Did you know that crime in Phoenix has dropped to a 30-year low as per PLEA, the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association? And, with a reported 100,000 illegals having moved out of Arizona, the estimated drop in K-12 education costs has been substantial. (The U.S. Department of Education places Arizona cost at $7,610 per pupil.)
Are you aware, rather than solve border problems, the feds have simply erected signs south of Phoenix alerting people of the border dangers? That five years before Rob Krentz was murdered on his own border ranch he begged for help for himself and other ranchers?
We whine about our circumstances, about the feds remaining unresponsive — yet when one strong man steps to the front and displays courage, we watch or participate in his humiliation and possibly his political martyrdom because he’s imperfect. Really?
Pearce acknowledges he’s made mistakes. And, absolutely, I disagree with some ways he’s tried to solve a few of our problems. But in our current political crisis, we’re in need of courageous leaders. As long as Pearce is in office, I will work to support him and encourage him to create humane, yet sensible policy.
As for outsiders who are intent on managing the politics of a strong Western state, where boldness comes from the genes of the courageous first settlers, I am aghast that even one District 18 citizen could be influenced in this costly sham.

It's a sad day in the history of Arizona the day extremist lefties fooled republicans into helping them to oust one of the greatest senators this state has ever produced. A sheethole like Mesa never deserved such greatness. Russell Pearce is larger than Mesa will ever be. A drive through the heart of Mesa shows it to be nothing but a terd world city full of terd world thinkers. Russell Pearce will go on to bigger and better places, and the fight to decimate the filthy scum invaders from the south will not end here today. Pearce helped to start the ball rolling and it's picking up speed. Look out terd world invaders. We are coming for you, and we will kick you out of our state and country. Perhaps Russell needs to consider running for Jon Kyl's US Senate seat. He'd be ten times better for Arizona than flaky flakes could ever be. In the meantime, all you illegal supporters join hands with La Ratza and do the hat dance in celebration. You deserve to celebrate a job well done. Then get back down in your bunkers cause the war isn't over by a long shot.

Gilbert Watch has fallen for, or produced, still another shameful Pearce dirty trick. The Pipefiters are one of the least likely groups to give any large amount to the recall effort.. This is unfortunate but true. A $50,000 donation would be utterly out of character. If asked, the Pipefiters will deny this is their report.
If you look at the financial disclosure for Citizens for a Better Arizona (truer words were never written), no such donation is listed. No such donation was ever received. It would be more than half of the total cash donations.
Pearce and his ilk put up a fake report - as they did a fake twitter account and a fake candidate.
Shameful dirty tricks. Still more reasons to get Pearce out of office before he ruins all of us.

Very pathetic Carolyn has nothing to say but rude name calling and bobunf has nothing at all but numbers he read from a La Ratza website. Nice to see someone show cites for there figures.

Notice how many people donated who don't live in LD18? On just the first page of contributors 12 out of 15 addresses are not in Mesa. That isn't surprising since Mesa citizens don't have 92 thousand dollars to give to Lewis. In fact most of the contributions came from outside Mesa.

Pearce is getting money donated to his campaign on a state and national level because the good work he has done (SB1070) and will continue to do, God willing, is affecting the nation as a whole, not just Arizona or LD18. That is why he was targeted by the progressive socialist and pro illegal alien groups. David Nichols, please go back to school and get your GED. Your knowledge about our country's economic problems are seriously lacking. Our bad economy was caused by many things, including and especially very lax government loan guarantee polices, that gave a green light to many mortgage lenders to write loans that NEVER should have been considered in the first place, and had NOTHING do to with the deportation of illegal aliens. Thanks to Barney Frank and friends, and especially his pet agencies, Fannie and Freddie, the housing market was overbuilt, buyers got loans that never should have been approved, and in the end, the bubble burst and you now see the end result of a seriously flawed government backed loan guarantee policy. It is a matter of fact, that Bill Clinton tried numerous times to reign in Fannie and Freddie, but was blocked in his own words, "by democrats". George Bush also tried to clean up Fannie and Freddie to the tune of FOURTEEN TIMES while he was in office, each and every time being blocked by democrats.
David Nichols, it's not the government's duty to put you into a house and make your payments for you. It's up to you to go out and support yourself and your family, including saving like the rest of us did to put money down on a home, and then being able to afford the mortgage payments, in addition to earning enough to pay the other bills and put food on the table. Your statement that our nations economic problems are a direct result of this country deporting illegal aliens is not only inaccurate, but laughable and absurd as well. Another thing, David, did you know that THOUSANDS of illegal aliens got Fannie and Freddie backed mortgages? Yep, they sure did. Did you also know that some of those same illegal aliens remortgaged their Fannie and Freddie backed mortgages, then took those nice piles of cash and fled back to Mexico, leaving the U.S. American Taxpaying Citizens holding the bag? Yep, they sure did. But then, you really did know that, right, David?
To the good citizens of Mesa, who like me, live in LD18, Linda Turley is RIGHT. I would you to take a moment and ponder this thought. Why is it that not a single person who lives in LD18 has started a recall drive against Senator Pearce? Why is Parraz, who lives in NORTH SCOTTSDALE and NOT in LD18, so concerned about our well being? The answer is clear and obvious. Parraz has a long history as a hired gun working to unions and other socialist progressive, Anit-American causes. In other words, he's just a hired gun with a legal background, sent here to to the dirtywork of Anti-American socialists and business owners who want cheap, under the table labor.
I have and always will be true to myself, my family and my country. I would rather eat a bullet, then sell my soul to the likes of Parraz, Lewis and biased commentators like Bill Richardson. Senator Pearce has done EXACTLY what he promised he would do and what we, the people, elected him to do. Therefore, there is absolutely NO reason to toss him out of office. I WILL do the right thing tomorow in the voting booth as I have the guts to do the right thing. I hope you all do, too.

The fact is the recall should never have happened in the first place. The people of this state overwhelmingly voted for Proposition 200 which became SB1070. Last year a news poll was taken nationwide and 61% of people in other states said Arizona has a right to defend themselves against illegal immigration. Yet on five separate occasions in front of the Mesa Library this writer experienced the recall signature seekers used scare tactics about AHCCC and other services going away if he stayed in office. There are several members in Arizona government working to balance the budget and cut costs to AHCCC as well as many other areas of public spending. The fact is, those opposing Russell Pearce have used this issue as a "back door" scare tactic when the real issue is illegal immigration. The recall has no merit at all.

Linda, you should look at the actual financial disclosure statements filled by the various campaigns. If you do bother to look, you will notice some important program in your article.
Donors from Mesa:
12% Pearce
10% Citizens Who Oppose the Pearce Recall
59% Lewis
22% Citizens for a Better Arizona (recall committee)
Donors from outside Arizona:
20% Pearce
34% Citizens Who Oppose the Pearce Recall
3% Lewis
11% Citizens for a Better Arizona
Money raised
$230,000 Pearce
$73,000 Citizens Who Oppose the Pearce Recall
$68,000 Lewis
$141,000 Citizens for a Better Arizona
Linda wrote: “a possible million dollars have been spent in this recall. Linda, didn’t you notice that the recall committee only raised $141,000? Of which $44,000 was an in-kind contribution from the attorney who defended the lawsuit Pearce brought against the recall - all the way to the Supreme Court?
Didn’t you notice, Linda, that a “million dollars” is way, way more than $141,000?
By the way, Linda, who paid Lisa Hauser, the attorney in Pearce’s failed lawsuit? She didn’t work for nothing and the expenditure isn’t on Pearce’s report. Is there another outfit spending money for Pearce that we don’t know about? Is something left out?
Linda also wrote, “much of it said to be from outside of Arizona.”
Didn’t you notice, Linda, that the “much” turned out to be 3% for Lewis, 11% for the recall committee, but 20% and 34% for Pearce’s two committees? Didn’t you notice, Linda, that 3% and 11% are not really “much” by any definition? Didn’t you notice that 3% is way less than 20% or 34%. Even 11% is way, way less?
Didn’t you notice, Linda, that the “outside influence” is predominately, way predominately, coming from people donating to Pearce’s campaign?
Don’t you think, Linda (having had the facts – right from the financial disclosure statements – pointed out, displayed, paraded for your benefit) that you should write a new column about the huge amounts of money Pearce is raising, nearly 90% from outside Mesa?
The world waits.

David,
If they are working here, and they are illegal, they are breaking all kinds of LAWS. FELONY ID THEFT, FRAUD (FELONY FALSE ID), tax evasion.... American Citizens have to follow THE LAW, The Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution protects citizens from having LAWS enforced on one group, and letting another group bypass. Don't FORGET the Selective Service registration, which a MAJORITY of Illegal Immigrants DO NOT fill out. According to the SS LAW, any alien, unless on a student visa or covered by TREATY, HAS to fill out SS Registration in age range of 18-26, if here more than ONE YEAR. IF they don't during that period and are either that age range OR have been here during that age period and DID NOT follow the SS LAW, they CAN NOT GET: Federal Assistance, Student Loans, Federal Jobs and MAY NOT get Citizenship. The fastest way to become a citizen of this Country, if here illegally, is to JOIN the military. Not a better way to prove you WANT to become a citizen and NOT break laws nor milk the system. My kids have to follow SS rules, AND have to have filed Income TAX (and parents as well) to even fill out STUDENT FAFSA. Again, WHY should the rules and laws of the this Country and STATE be rewarded to those whom IGNORE the LAWS and Sovereignty?

Republicans in Mesa are being duped by the extreme left into ridding them of their greatest enemy, Senator Pearce. They talk about outsiders funding Pearce's campaign while ignoring the people who initiated this recall election. Check out this page from recall organizer Chad Snow's website. It seems that Mr. Snow makes a living catering to illegal aliens filing workers compensation claims.
If you are an immigrant or undocumented worker who has been seriously injured while on the job, in Phoenix or throughout the state, you have a friend and champion in our Snow & Carpio, PLC, workers' compensation law firm.
We believe in justice for all injured Arizona workers. Our attorneys Chad Snow and Xavier Alexander Carpio have almost 20 years of experience getting results for injured workers of all backgrounds. Both partners and all staff are fluent in the Spanish language, so you will feel comfortable speaking with us about your case.
Remember: If you were injured at your job in Arizona, your immigration status is not a factor. You are as deserving of workers' compensation benefits as a worker who is a U.S. citizen. The Arizona Workers Compensation Act defines covered employees as "every person in the service of an employer ... including aliens legally or illegally permitted to work for hire ... " (A.R.S. 23-901(6)(b).
Randy Parraz has spent the past sixteen years of his professional life fighting for change and civil rights.
Randy’s commitment to public service was inspired by his father, John Parraz, who as a Sergeant with the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, co-‐founded an organization to improve the recruitment, hiring and retention of Latinos in the field of law enforcement.
Both of these extreme left outsiders brought you to this recall election with lies and distortions. They both support amnesty, open borders, the dream act, and a republican named Lewis who is very like minded. Don't let the left decide who will represent you Mesa. Don't let La Ratza (THE RACE) dictate to you.

Claims that Lewis cost the state $1.9 million are false. It was the Joy Schools that took $1.9 million over what they were entitled. Lewis's Sequoia schools provided services to the Joy schools (Joy purchased teachers and other services from Sequoia) but never did anything improper, and were never accused by the state of wrongdoing. This is a pernicious lie put out there by the Pearce camp. Rumor is that Chuck Coughlin shopped that story to the media on Pearce's behalf, but anyone who did any checking realized that it wasn't true. So, Shane Wikfors of Sonoran News offered to do a hit piece, and made these accusations, which have been repeated in several right-wing blogs. They are not true, and that Pearce & Co. would traffic in a lie designed to harm someone's character is a sign that Pearce should be replaced.

But people that are fast to point this out fail to point out that Lewis cost the state $1.9 million dollars with his inflated enrollment numbers at Sequoia Schools..."
So District 18 is choosing between the man who 'accepted gifts' in five figures and the man who 'cost the state' 7 figures. As the eminent philosopher Chubby Checker once remarked "How low can you go?"

You have to be kidding, Linda. You are supposed to be a seasoned journalist, not a mouthpiece for the right wing wacko known as Russell Pearce. The recall is for citizens in LD 18. They signed the petitions, not outsiders. Pearce is the one with most of his money coming from outside his district and even outside his state. The man is corrupt and his opponent is not a Democrat or a "tool" of the Democrats. Jerry Lewis is a well respected conservative Republican, endorsed by many prominent Mesa residents. Did you get some Fiesta Bowl tickets for defending him? Oh, that's right he paid for the tickets. Still looking for the cancelled checks. Shame on you Linda. You should be ashamed of such an irresponsible piece of garbage.

I don't agree with much of what Sen. Pearce has done as of late (including cutting education funding from the general fund about as much as was put in by the 1-cent sales tax we the people voted in), however, he is the better candidate.
Many people point out that Pearce accepted "gifts" from the Fiesta Bowl of somewhere between $30-50k (don't remember the exact amount). OK, he is a politician, that happens, and sometimes you accept those things. But people that are fast to point this out fail to point out that Lewis cost the state $1.9 million dollars with his inflated enrollment numbers at Sequoia Schools. That's $1.9 MILLION dollars of TAXPAYER money. Thankfully the Sequoia schools paid that money back to the state, but they kinda had to since someone (including Lewis) would have to have gone to jail if it wasn't paid back.
That fact, coupled with the fact Pearce did actually and honestly balance the budget this year, make me believe that Pearce is the "lesser of two evils." If we all step back and look at the broader picture, not just the "SB1070" stuff, it is easy to see who has more integrity than the other candidate. You and I may not like what Pearce does in regards to a lot of things, but at least we know where we stand with him, and he does work hard to fulfill what he promises as a politician.
Mind you, I'm not putting a "Vote for Russell Pearce" bumper sticker on my car, but he does deserve our vote in this recall election.

CooperG - You don't have any facts. All you have is hatred for Pearce and Patriots that believe in the rule of law. Thanks you Linda for a well written article of the plain facts.

TeaPartyPatriot - the problem is nothing she said is demonstrably true. Seriously, nothing. Nothing as is nada. Zip.
I wish I could tell you what to do when that happens, but I can't. Delusion and denial are tough things to overcome. But as the saying goes, you can have your own opinion, but you can't have your own facts. Too bad the facts are not on your side.

Dueling made up statistics, like fighting with paper swords. It's not that hard. Pearce began serving as a Senator in 2009, if you live in his district, did your life get better since then? If so vote for Pearce. Did it get worse, stay the same? Then give Lewis a shot, you don't know if he's any good and you know how good, or bad Pearce is. All the stats in the world, real, fudged or just plain ol' made up on the spot have nothing to do with what you already know.

Well written article Linda. You stated the facts as they clearly are without any distortions. The progressive socialists that slur you in their comments are meaningless dribble.
CooperG posted at 12:41 pm on Fri, Oct 28, 2011.
Obviously, Linda, you don't understand the Constitution. It was the voters of LD18 who exercised their rights to recall Pearce and they did so. So it wasn't "the Democrats" who did it, it was "the people." But I guess Constitutional rights only matter when YOU get to use or abuse them.
As for a political shift, what's wrong with that when the path Pearce has us on is killing jobs, making schools poorer, raises taxes, and puts seniors at risk? I know you're old, but some of us have kids in schools and they have futures even though you don't. We need change because, quite frankly, your way isn't working.

And by the way, the outsiders are in Mr. Pearce's camp. Just look at the recent campaign finance reports. A great majority of Mr. Pearce's support comes from out of state. I wonder who is controlling whom here?

I love Linda Turley and usually agree with her position. However, she's either misinformed or delirious when it comes to Mr. Pearce.
Just because crime had decreased, doesn't mean that SB1070 or any other nativist legislation that Mr. Pearce has been behind, has had anything to do with it. The facts are that crime decreased dramatically at the same time that illegal increased. The FBI crime statistics dramatically point this out. And so, Ms. Turley, please explain how you get your figures. AZ Fact Check has addressed these fallacies that Mr. Pearce continually chants, and has found them to either be misleading or wholly unsupported by any reliable facts.
Please, Ms. Turley, check your facts (not Russell Pearce's "facts"), and maintain your position as one on whom the public can rely for accurate and fair commentary. You've just about lost it on this one.

The Senator Pearce recall was a sham by the liberal/progressive pro-illegal/open border crowd. The only difference between Mr Lewis and Sen Pearce is the illegal immigration issue. Mr Lewis has stated that he will legislate according to his religious beliefs over public law. Now what kind of slippery slope is that.

There's only two things missing from Linda's piece.
Facts and objectivity.

Ms. Turley-Hansen and her regular "Psuedo-Christian" propaganda (aka trash) in which she bashes any person that is against the triumvirate Pearce-Arpaio-Brewer.
Where are the "standing ovations" for the loser-GED-Governor Brewer which has done NOTHING to get AZ back on track? We are still 2nd in the Nation in Foreclosures, lost more than 350,000 jobs since she took office and the overall population of the State has shrunk more than 10%.
Pearce did NOTHING to bring AZ "out of the red" as she stated. Cutting education, kicking people off of medical care (remember the "they will figure it out" quote from Pearce), demonizing a whole sector of the population by instituting a formal system of racial profiling, stealing from the FIESTA BOWL and trying to justify it by hiding from the press is something that no one should be proud of. And if we add the open support of a neo-nazi group (no one can forget that Pearce forwarded an e-mail supporting a neo-nazi organization to thousands of his supporters in 2006) and even was the person behind the baptism of JT Read (neo-nazi/white supremacy leader/vigilante-on the desert).
Ms. Turley-Hansen.....is Tom Tancredo (leader of anti-immigrant from Colorado) a resident from District 18 in Mesa? He has sent out massive e-mail blasts asking for money for Pearce. Why did Ms. Turley-Hansen conveniently kept quiet the fact that a whole stadium with capacity of 13,000 in Mesa was rented out for a Pearce rally and only 300 people showed up? That is the real support of Pearce.....
Look at Pearce's past donors. In the past election, less than 10% of the funds came from his district. Do you need a drawing in crayons to understand where the rest of the monies came from?
PROPAGANDA...and this lady calls herself a Christian? What? That is just another lie. We have ready her spoofs, hate-mongering and spews over the years!!!!
Mike McClellan posted at 8:00 am on Fri, Oct 28, 2011.
Ms. Turley Hansen's playing a little fast and loose with the facts. Which, given who she's trying to prop up, isn't surprising.
An example. She writes: "A leader whose state is currently number two in job growth, from number 49 in the nation when the recession began."
Uh, no. It led the nation in small business job growth for a couple of months (you can read the article here -- http://www.examiner.com/small-business-marketing-in-phoenix/arizona-leads-nation-small-business-job-growth
Overall, we are at 46th in the nation in year-to-year job creation.
And I notice Ms. Turley Hansen doesn't mention this:
Arizona is fifth worst in the nation for "economic stress" -- a combination of unemployment, bankruptcies, and foreclosures. -- http://azcapitoltimes.com/news/2011/07/19/western-states-lag-in-recovery/
Talk about misleading. Ms. Hansen's phony stat certainly fits the bill.

My rant holds as much fact and truth as the Turley-Hansen propaganda piece!
Rumor and innuendo are all she spouts, but you take that drivel as the truth????
If you believe this, ""It’s one thing that a possible million dollars have been spent in this recall, (told to Pearce by Arizona Congressman Trent Franks) "" there's no hope for you. Million dollars??? Trent Franks is a trusted source??? Give me a break!!

downtownresident: Your rant included nothing to support your accusations. It was full of insults and assumptions and frankly showed the lack of intellect that is the problem in this state and country. You are right, politics on both sides are filled with people telling lies to the masses and as you clearly get your information from leftists outlets it is obviously working. Personally, I don't have much of an opinion on Russell Pearce, but it is painfully obvious that left wing fanatics are the ones calling for this recall as well as wasting taxpayers money to carry it out. Perhaps in your hatred of everything conservative you just missed the facts and chose to ride the innuendo wave? I do find it funny how the left always bashes the right for our beliefs and stance and tells us how intolerant we are...yet every time I see a rant like yours it shows who the intolerant really are. Thank you for showing your true hatred of this country in every disdainful word you hurl, it just makes me more determined to fight against the growing cancer in this country...You sir/mam are that disease!
