As my thoughts go out to the families impacted by the acts of a madman in Tucson, I wonder if it is too early to start clamoring for the resignation of Pima County Sheriff Dupnik? This guy has got to go. He probably did not do his job and then has the gall to blame the 1st and 2nd amendments. He embodies the politicization of law enforcement that is downright scary. Maybe I should be careful about what I write, Clarence might take offense.

Tom Shuett is right, he is clamoring. He threw in the 1st and 2nd amendments and politicization of what is an elected job. Well, Duh!

Yet Tom seems to think the sheriff could have prevented it: "He probably did not do his job." How would he have done it? By warning people that the climate is getting too mean and hateful? What do you think he's doing?

Wake up, Tom... Talk about someone trying to stir up the fire!

Tom, you state: "He [Sheriff Dupnik] probably did not do his job."

How do you arrive at this conclusion? From the content and tone of his statements, I'd conclude nothing more and nothing less than that "He probably was frustrated that notwithstanding his doing all that he reasonably could do, this tragedy happened anyway." Not unlike Jared's parents' expressed regrets about their failing to catch signs, Sheriff Dupnik expressed sorrow that rankerous political talk may have contributed to the problem. But he pointed no fingers an any specific person. Rather, without knowing anything about Gabby's e-mail expressing similar thougths to another elected official only the evening before, Sheriff Dupnik expressed the same sentiments.

Would you criticise Gabby for her e-mail?

Turns out that our rankerous political talk may have had no influence whatsoever on Jared. It was his inability to cope with society, in highschool, in college, in life, and his inartfully reaching out to Gabby and his inability to understand her response which focused him on her. Rhetoric may have contributed to his expectation that he would not be helped. But Jared and Jared alone was and is to blame for his actions. His level of insanity may earn him some slack in sentencing. But insanity is seldom a defense to the act. I expect that now he is incapable of contributing to his defense and will not be tried at this time.
