I read “When you teach, your students teach you” by columnist Mark Scarp.

Mr. Scarp has explained a viewpoint that I was unable to see, as I am student myself. He is a teacher — a professor — and actually learns himself. It amazes me to think that a teacher learns when he’s teaching. And I also realize why teachers teach; as Scarp puts it:

“Nothing lightens the burden of the passing of years better than to spend it celebrating the triumphs of young people ready to use their knowledge, energies and talents to do what you’ve done, only better.”

I feel like I can see through the eyes of my instructor. And I thank Mr. Scarp for that.

That sounds like the statements of a well adjusted and self aware teenager. I would imagine if schools were filled with more like him, teaching would be a much easier job.

    Son,
You shouldn't be "seeing" through the eyes of your instructor. You should be become "aware" of facts and then reading as much as you can about the subject. There are always two sides to an argument. Positives and negatives on both sides. When you study History these arguments are fascinating to discover. I was just watching the movie "The Ship of Fools" there are so many pro's and con's and political nuances in the facts behind that movie. It would be a perfect term project. It is sad that most of our students only are being taught a .......Liberal if not Marxist agenda in our High Schools, Colleges and Universities.

If you do your on "vetting" of the sources of pro's and con's, you won't fall into a Left or Right point of view. Look at Life with "both" eyes open. Don't let your admiration for a teacher or professor color "your" perspective. Be your own person.

    John,

I've taught I've studied. Here is one thing I've learned. If you didn't learn something today, you wasted a whole day.

What you learn from teachers is only their prejudices. In the fifty years between us, I didn't take full advantage, didn't learn enough. Maybe, you'll be better. I really hope so.

Being able to see another's point of view is part of critical thinking. It isn't prejudices; it isn't Marxist. For Pete's sake. It's just the old "walk a mile in my shoes" kind of comment.

John, when you get the trolls waxing pathetic in this venue, you've hit the nail on the head. Or, to paraphrase, you could see it from their points of view, but then, the only good advice "be your own person". I suspect you already were your own person.

I personally thought that column was a load of bologna on rye, but, you have a right to your opinion.

    Back to the funny papers.
