Whoa! The Maricopa County Community College District governing board will decide Tuesday whether to raise the property tax to help offset a steep decline in state aid. Not that MCCCD can't manage their own fiscal affairs, but who the heck in their right minds ever passed a law giving a community college board the authority to raise our property taxes?

School districts primary funding is through a tax on property. You should know that our Republican legislators recently passed a voter approved tax hike that purportedly was first, for education and secondly for police on the streets. What actually happened is that the legislature cut spending for education and gave the Dept. of Corrections a $10 million budget increase.

Also, It should be noted that property taxes on business, those with the most valuable property, are lower now than at any time in the past 20 years.
Republican legislators have “crafted . . . plans to shift property taxes now paid by businesses onto the backs of homeowners.

But they say their constituents will understand.”

What this means is that schools have no choice but to raise personal property tax in order to fund education.

Maricopa County Community College District (MCCCD) is made up of 10 community colleges -- Chandler, Gilbert, Estrella Mountain, GateWay, Glendale, Mesa, paradise Valley, Phoenix, Rio Salado, Scottsdale, and South Mountain. The community colleges are funded in three ways: property taxes, tuition and state aid. The district governing board has the authority to raise property-tax revenues. The Maricopa County Assessor's Office then sets property-tax rates accordingly to raise the desired revenue amount.

MCCCD governing board votes tonight to raise the property tax levy by 3 percent, the amount of tax increase on a house assessed at $100000 would be $2.95 per year. Last year, the board considered and rejected a property-tax increase.

    So Leon,

You assert that the MCCB is Left-wing. But if they were Right-wing and voted to increase property taxes, "No one would be complaining!"

Cerulean and I are confused. As he so aptly explains, the MCCB has not choice. Please explain yourself. Your logic seems flawed once again.

Once again leon resorts to name calling and cultural bias. He always is touting love it or leave it to everyone else. It’s time he followed his own advise and move as far away as he is off-point.

Well, leon, hope you enjoy your trip to wherever the grasses grow, the flowers bloom and everyone is a right wing WASP. Ta-ta.
