While in college I read a George Orwell novel called “Animal Farm.” In it a revolution was inspired by the animals to kick the intolerant farmer Jones off his farm, and thus the animals assumed the leadership. However, shortly thereafter the pigs assumed a subtle takeover of the leadership and quickly changed the political organization from one of a democracy to that of a despotic elite run by the pigs.

Presidential race

Democrats acting like pigs

While in college I read a George Orwell novel called “Animal Farm.” In it a revolution was inspired by the animals to kick the intolerant farmer Jones off his farm, and thus the animals assumed the leadership. However, shortly thereafter the pigs assumed a subtle takeover of the leadership and quickly changed the political organization from one of a democracy to that of a despotic elite run by the pigs.

In their transition, they changed the animal equal rights commandments of the farm to say, “All animals are created equal … but some animals are more equal than others.” The organization morphed into a communistic, tyrannical dictatorship.

Having lived a good portion of my life in Michigan and Florida, I was shocked by the recent imposition by the national Democratic officials who changed the voting structure of these two states to only give the voters 50 percent of their voting power in the primary convention. Perhaps, they might say, “All Democrats are equal, but some Democrats are more equal than others.”

Not the brightest bulb

I’m writing about Armin Ciersdorff’s letter: “McCain should know better” (May 31):

John McCain graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. His class ranking was 894th out of 899. In other words, fifth from the bottom of his class.

He received his appointment to the Naval Academy because his father and grandfather were both four-star admirals. It’s my suspicion that the reason he didn’t flunk out was because his father was a four-star admiral.

Either McCain is not real bright or he didn’t study very hard. Perhaps both.

Do we want our president to be real bright or not-so-bright?

Gay marriage

Dangerous thinking

I found the letter written by Kenneth R. Foote (May 29) concerning. To suggest that homosexuality is in no way genetic or naturally occurring in the human species is baffling in the face of mounting evidence to the contrary. Also, to suggest that the Bible has not been changed by time and circumstances betrays an ignorance of history. He goes on to mention that only “thoughtless” people have come to respect homosexuality.

Those who respect homosexuals can hardly be said to be more thoughtless than those who blindly follow an antiquated, irrelevant tome that has been changed countless times over the centuries. What is more thoughtless than to let a book think for you?

Foote said the “chief social building block of civilization is a heterosexual man and woman united in marriage and engaged in procreation.” This may be, but abuse of homosexuals is hardy civilized. Foote concludes by insisting that the survival of the human race depends entirely on traditional, time-honored heterosexual unions. This is perhaps true superficially, though I believe a greater danger to the human race lies with intolerant religious zealots.

It is simply time for us to grow up. As the women’s suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton said, “The Bible and the church were the greatest stumbling blocks of women’s emancipation.” What was true about the Bible and human progress then is doubly true now; they are not mutually compatible.
