Now that the war is over, the omnivorous news cable networks must feed elsewhere.

A relatively meaningless crime case involving good-looking people can always be turned into a national soap opera. Thus we have coast-to-coast coverage of Laci Peterson, whose only claim to fame is her apparent murder last Christmas Eve near her home in Modesto, Calif. That she was pregnant adds pathos to the tragedy, but the fact is that thousands of women are slain in this country every year with CNN rushing nary a camera to the scene.

But one facet of this case is genuinely interesting. Laci’s husband Scott, arrested last week and arraigned Monday, has been charged with not one murder but two — the second being the death of Conner Peterson, who was to have been born in February.

That a fetus could have a name and be considered the victim of a murder troubles the head of the National Organization for Women in Morris County, Calif.

Speaking with a clarity of mind quite uncommon among radical pro-abortionists, Mavra Stark said: “If this is murder, well, then any time a late-term fetus is aborted, they could call it murder.”

The dirty little secret of the abortion industry — which actually is no secret at all to anyone who can think — is that unborn children are people. They can have names. They can be, and often are, born months before their due dates and not just survive but thrive, thanks to great medical care.

Yet the abortion industry persists in denying their humanity. This makes it easier to justify slaughtering them. As long as they are just “embryos” and “fetuses,” the abortionist and his “patient” can kill with a clear conscience. In their minds it is even permissible to kill a “fetus” who has gestated well past the point of viability — a fetus who, had he or she been born prematurely to a caring mother, would have been lavished with love and medical attention.

It does no good to split hairs, as radical abortionists do, over whether the child is “wanted” or not. Why is it murder to kill a child if the mother hoped to actually give birth, and not murder if she and some bloodguilty doctor conspire to deliberately end its life?

The pro-abortion crowd has no ready answer for that question, because the only logical answer is that it is murder in both cases.

But as regards that truth, the “pro-choice” industry chooses to dwell in eternal, fierce denial.
