Cynics who have nothing good to say about the Arizona Cardinals probably are characterizing Sunday’s decisive win as something they wish the team would do here once in awhile.

Well, would these critics rather have had them lose?

The larger point about Sunday’s game in Mexico City was that it was a trial balloon to gauge interest in American football outside of America.

Soccer is “football” to the world, of course. Azteca Stadium holds more than 103,000 people, much more than any NFL arena. Azteca held a capacity crowd Sunday, but the big question is whether most were there simply to check out the novelty of American football, or left wishing for a team of their own.

A very big question. If Americans find those NFL tickets to be expensive, you can bet citizens of other nations will also. NFL teams are expensive businesses to operate no matter where they do so.

Perhaps the real result of Sunday’s game was on a much smaller scale than the NFL thought: At least the Cardinals' first win of the season gave Arizonans something to cheer about.
