The 2008 presidential race has at last reached its apex — it’s all downhill from here, folks. Pseudo-talk show pundit Stephen Colbert, of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report,” on Tuesday threw his hat into both rings — he’s running as a Republican and as a Democrat.

As reported by the Associated Press, Colbert announced his intentions with the statement: “After nearly 15 minutes of soul-searching, I have heard the call.” It would seem he gave it more consideration than more serious candidates have.

Sure, this is a candidacy on the same level as those of comedian Pat Paulsen, who ran almost continuously from 1968 through 1996 and used the slogan, “We Can Be Decisive, Probably.”

But while Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama engage in a never-ending game of “Dodging for Dollars,” and GOP front-runners Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani refine the “Did Not, Did So” debate strategy, a Colbert candidacy could be just the diversion we need until primary season actually begins.

We’re ready for some truthiness. And that’s The Word.
