Bill Richardson (Aug. 6 commentary) is right once again. Stop and think about 38,000 felony criminals wandering around the state, mostly in the Phoenix area. 38,000! These people are hard core, violent offenders. Their warrants remain unserved. Why? What is stopping our “toughest” sheriff from serving them? This is his core function, AND, they’re killing cops, our protectors, in record numbers!

Will we forever fall for the smoke and mirrors of image over substance? The next time you see Sheriff Joe Arpaio on TV rounding up gardeners and landscapers (mostly here legally), please ask yourself why, and wonder if the 38,000 criminals are watching TV too, and laughing their butts off. Old smoke and mirrors Joe. His negligence is no less than criminal, and so is ours for falling for it.

D.J. Diebold, Scottsdale/Mesa

DJ: You and "Smoke with no mirrors" Richardson are all wet. Maricopa County has how many police departments? Who issued most of the warrants? Why aren't the police departments doing their share of the work in rounding up the felons within their jurisdiction? I doubt if the MCSO charter is to devote their resources exclusively to rounding up felons. Besides, Phil Gordon and Jack Harris would have their noses out of joint in a nano second if Joe's folks dared set foot in their city without notifying them first. Now, if he has to give notification, why not let them go pick up the folks they issued the warrants for in the first place?
