We salute the town of Gilbert and the organizers of the community's fourth annual Constitution Fair.

Families by the droves came to MesquiteHigh School's football field last Saturday evening to celebrate America's Constitution, to watch patriotic performances and cheer 52 new Americans who were sworn in on a stage at the north end of the football field.

Presiding was none other than native Arizonan and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

One moment the scene resembled a rock concert as green glow sticks waved in the darkness in synch with Neil Diamond's "Coming to America."

The next moment playful children hushed as hundreds if not thousands of people stood up from their blankets in quiet dignity when the justice climbed the stage to sit behind a make portable court bench.

And then they broke out in enthusiastic applause as the new citizens stood when their country of origin was called-from Nigeria to Iraq.

What a grand celebration of citizenship and our Constitution in a great East Valley community.

There are 52 new American citizens who will remember to their dying day the people of Gilbert, Arizona.
