Motivational speaker Susan Stamper Brown has motivated me to respond to her commentary, “America’s sacrifice gives Iraq people a chance for peace”. As a marine veteran I appreciate her desire to honor the troops. However, any pretense of our making Iraq a better place by making war on it for nine years is sad, to say the least.

The cost will continue to climb for decades to come for both the U.S. and Iraq. Throwing out phrases like “mission accomplished” and “victory” are hollow. What have we accomplished? Iraq was already an independent and sovereign nation before we invaded, so what are we “birthing”. Yes, Saddam was a terrible dictator and was  one of a long line of dictators supported by the U.S. for years. Even though President Bush said Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, he decided to overthrow a sovereign nation by using select information to sell the war. Yes, honor the less than 1 percent of Americans who sacrifice and choose to serve in the military and pray our leaders will put them in harms way only as the last resort.
