Our View: It’s a little harder to gauge the level of public interest in Tuesday’s elections for Mesa and Gilbert. Maricopa County’s new permanent early voting list automatically sends out ballots by mail to those who previously signed up, instead of requiring voters to actively request a ballot.

What we do know is both elections are important. In Mesa, voters are being asked to approve up to $51 million in bed-tax rebates over 30 years to support the construction of a 1,500-room resort and convention center by Gaylord Entertainment. The project would be the first major anchor of the urban village development planned for the GM Desert Proving Ground. The Tribune Editorial Board has urged a “yes” vote on Proposition 300.

In Gilbert, voters are selecting between six candidates for mayor and seven candidates for two seats on the Town Council. The Tribune doesn’t endorse candidates for elected office.

Mesa and Gilbert residents who didn’t vote early should get to the polls Tuesday, which are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.,

and remember to bring your photo identification. To find your polling place, go to recorder.maricopa.gov/pollingplace05/pollingplace.aspx or call (602) 506-1511.
