I am a registered Republican, but I supported U.S. Rep. Harry Mitchell then and now. I was a past president of the Tempe Jaycees in 1978-79 and we lost our project parking cars for the ASU football games the year before. We negotiated a better contract with hopes of getting this 20-year-old project back in our club again. We decided to paint addresses on people’s curbs for $1, in the heat of the summer, while we waited on ASU’s decision. I have a picture of Mitchell, who was our mayor, handing me $1 for the job. Very shortly after this picture got in the newspapers we got our oldest ways and means project back, ASU football parking, which went to sponsoring youth services in our community.
I hope the painted numbers are still in front of Mitchell’s modest home, which he and his wife still live in. I proudly have this picture in my scrapbook and show it to friends. It is one of the few times a politician is giving a regular citizen money out of his pocket. I don’t support Obamacare, but support Mitchell.
