On behalf of those in our community to who struggle each month to consistently keep food on their family's table, I want to thank you in advance for your participation in the annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers.
On Saturday, place non-perishable food items by your mailbox before your letter carrier drives by and he or she will take them back to the station to be distributed to St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance and other local food banks in the Valley.
This event is the largest one-day food drive of the year with hundreds of thousands of pounds of food collected locally, and the food you donate arrives at a critical time for St. Mary's and our sister food banks. Summer is tough - children are out of school and without access to free- and reduced-breakfast and lunch programs and parents have higher bills: child care, energy, fuel.
As a result, we distribute more food during the summer months than we do even during the holidays.
So, thank you for participating - and a very special thanks to the hard-working letter carriers who voluntarily and willingly have conducted this drive for 19 years now. No small feat in the hot Arizona summer heat. Your efforts that day will have a long and lasting impact for many months to come.
Terry Shannon, President & CEO, St. Mary's Food Bank Alliance

With the PO asking Congress to take Saturdays off to save money and avoid insolvency, perhaps we will be dispensing food to our letter carriers soon.
Follow Accuracy's suggestions.
Any of you who have organizations wishing to do humanitarian food packaging to benefit St. Mary's may contact the LDS cannery on South Del Rio in Mesa. We Mormons provide the food and the containers. You provide the people to do the packaging. St. Mary's gets the food.
