Why is it that some people want to end the consumption of meat and dairy? Who would eat and drink these products if we don’t? Someone has to. As for those cows, well, they HAVE to be milked. There is no one else who can do it (you think they are smart enough to milk themselves, yes? No?).

Meat is actually good for you, if you eat it sparingly. Too much is not healthy, of course. But did anyone ever get fat from eating only a small portion of meat in their lives? As for milk, there is plenty of calcium in milk. And milk is good for our bones. I am not an anti-veggies person. I love carrots. I love corn. I love many things that are good for us, but I do not want to spend the rest of my life eating nothing but veggies and fruits and grain. I love oatmeal; I usually have it once a week, or so, along with some milk. Is this so wrong? As for people saying that sugar is a “dangerous drug and not a source of energy”, well, that is not true. Sugar IS a great source of energy. History proves this to be a fact (just watch that Gilligan’s Island episode with the radioactive veggies the castaways find). I challenge David Rich or any other liberal to give a good reason why we should eliminate meat and dairy products, other than their continuous ranting about obesity. I don’t want to hear those racdrops.

Spencer: I agree with you 100% that no one should be telling us what not to eat. If we want meat & dairy that's our business. However, you are really off-base when it comes to your science. Actually, lean meat (fish, game meat) are one of the best sources of protein for humans to consume. Fatty meats are not so good. Neither is dairy. Simply put, humans should not be consuming milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, etc. Cows milk is for calves - not humans. We should also not be consuming grains or beans. They contain anti-nutrients and make us fat. Feedlots give cows corn to fatten them up. It has the same effect on us. As to sugar. You are so wrong. Refined sugar (from cane or beets or corn) is a terrible food. It provides a short quick burst of energy that makes a mess of our systems. It spikes insulin levels and over time lead to insulin resistance and then onto diabetes. The consumption of sugar has been one of the worst things that has caused the stunning obesity in the US. If history proves anything, it's that the modern diet we have is killing us. The amount of research being done is overwhelming and often confusing, but one thing is clear: the government food pyramid is wrong. We should be consuming copious amounts of veggies, a lesser amount of fruit, quality meat proteins, some eggs, and not much else. If you doubt this, read up on the Paleo diet and a recent book "Why We Get Fat". But regardless, I'll eat what I want and I don't want anyone do-gooders telling me or you what we can and can't eat.

No one can tell you what you should or shouldn't eat. Eat whatever you feel is best.

However, with obesity getting out of control in America, it would be unwise to ignore some obvious causes to that problem.

"There is plenty of Calcium in milk. And milk is good for our bones." Yes and no. Bone degeneration is actually more prevalent in countries with higher dairy consumption. We weren't born to guzzle milk from bovine; it's just not a natural thing.

The arguments go both ways, and everyone has an opinion. The truth is that we have problems in this country regarding obesity. If anything, it can probably be traced to our consumption of processed foods and beverages, especially sugary drinks.

As for me, I've recently cut my red meat and dairy consumption, and although I'm not overweight, I've noticed that some of the excess "flab" has gone away. Ultimately, the fatties will die, either by gluttony or by zombies. After all, rule #1 of surviving the zombie apocalypse is "cardio," and the obese will be the first ones fed to the horde.

High levels of high-fructose corn syrup-the kind used in sweetners- has disrupted synapse communication in the hippocamlus, a brain region devoted to learning and memory. Omega-3s appears to repair some of those connections, helping to "minimize the damage,". UCLA Neurosurgeon Frenando Gomez-Pinilla

The food we are eating today is no more fatty than the food our ancestors ate 80-100 years ago. The difference is, they were farmers, field workers, factory workers, miners, etc. Today their descendants sit on chairs in air-conditioned offices, eating the same food that sustained hard working physical labor.

A shame that no one is realizing this.

Oh, and Spencer Anderson...while Gilligan's Island was an American show, it does not accurately depict American history. Neither does Bugs Bunny. ;)

Are you kidding, farmers did not have processed food and it is processed food that is so harmful, farmers didn't have all the sugar that we eat today, try to do a little research next time. It is true farmers through hard labor were able to burn off excess fat.

Spencer is right, people. Sugar is a source of energy. This is a fact, people. Perhaps it won't give you a whole lot of energy, but if you eat enough, it certainly will. Granted, too much sugar is not good for you. I don't eat much sugar myself. But it is no drug. People have been eating sugar for centuries. You really want to stop it now? The same thing applies to meat. Not the energy thing - the we've-been-eating-it-for-centuries thing. You can't stop it now. IF we did ban meat consumption, we'd also have to ban all books and movies that mention meat, or it'll make future generations too "curious" about meat. It won't work.

US life expectancy at birth in 1920:
    Males, 56 years.
    Females, 57

US life expectancy at birth in 2011
    Males, 76
    Females, 81

What were we complaining about exactly?

I'll take meat and potatoes over broccoli and tofu on Thanksgiving. You vegans can eat whatever the H-E- double-hockey-sticks you want.
