In response to the numerous “Venters” who support Sheriff Joe:

You seem to think there is no problem with the sheriff and his deputies arresting people because they don’t look like a citizen. One venter even said, “If it looks like a duck, acts like a duck, and quacks like a duck...” Well, I have a story that I hope will change your perspective.

My husband came to the United States over 13 years ago — legally — on a student visa. We married and then filed for a change of status, and then later to become a permanent resident. We followed all the steps, jumped through all the hoops, and paid all the filing fees. At one point, we had an interview with an INS agent. I was seven months pregnant and the man told us he thought we were married for convenience and put a hold on his status. It took two more children, the purchase of two homes, owning his successful business, and more paperwork to convince the powers that be that we were committed to each other, and not just married so he could become a citizen.

After more than seven years, and thousands of dollars in filing fees, my husband was allowed to take the tests to become a citizen. He studied hard and received a 100 percent on a test that most natural born citizens would have difficulty even passing. Friends and family attended his swearing in ceremony and we are grateful that he is now a citizen of our great country.

Now, if you saw my husband you might say he looks like a duck. If you speak to him, you might say he sounds like a duck. However, you would be wrong! He is an eagle. Not because he was born here, but because he chose to and worked hard for the privilege that so many “real citizens” take for granted.

    Denise,

Thanks for sharing your and your husbands story with us.

In 1975, I drove my US Army unit clert 100 miles to Rome, New York for his swearing in ceremony in Federal Court. It was one of the most impressive and memorable scenes of my life. His older brother living then in Buffalo sponsored his coming to the US and he joined the Army so that he could get his citizenship sooner. He and his family had crossed the Yugoslavian border into Italy, then onto Switzerland from their native home in Checoslovakia.

And Slabside, the first right he exercised was to purchase a hand gun and go to the firing range with his brother. I help both of them learn to shoot straight. But neither was interested in AP rounds or 30 + round magazines.

    What a great story, Denise!

Your story is a testament to what makes an "American"...it's not what you look like or sound like...it's what's in your heart and spirit. People from around the world come to America because of freedom and opportunity. Most are successful, some need a little help and, unfortunately, a very, very few have a bit of badness in their hearts.

Your premise that the sheriff and his deputies are arresting people because they don’t look like a citizen is both ignorant and insulting to those of us who value citizenship, and I stopped reading there. You should at least begin your rants with something intelligent before your agenda motivated insults on true Americans. On the lighter side, We now find it is illegal – at least in Arizona - to promote the overthrow of the United States government. Thank God for the courage of Arizona's legislature and governor. An administrative law judge ruled Tuesday that a Tucson school district's ethnic studies program violates state law, agreeing with the findings of Arizona's public schools chief.

I am sorry but 9 times out of 10...the "duck" hypothesis works. Let's say you are a Cop. You have been having numerous burglaries committed by 3 young men in a ritzi area of Paradise Valley or Las Sendas...you know...one of those ritzi areas of the Valley. It's 4am and you see 3 young men, all around the same age, driving a beaten-up vehicle. You haven't seen anyone driving around the area for hours, just these young men. Say they are of certain ethnic persuasions (as Richard Nixon liked to say...lol), do you wave to these young men ? Do you think how lucky can you be...born in poverty but some distant relative dies and leaves one or all of these young men his/her estate and luxury home? Or, do you as 99.9999999% of the human population on this Earth think ...."flys like a duck, quacks like a duck, waddles like a duck = DUCK".
So give us a break with the..."quit judging me by what I am and judge me by who I am". Cops are not College or University professors. They are hired for one thing...to protect the "MAJORITY" of the Public. Cops are hired to enforce the Laws of the Land and Federal Illegal Alien Laws are included. Will the rights of a minority be violated to protect the rights of the Majority.............YOU ARE DARN TOOT-ING.
It has happened since Lucy started doing walking around the Rift Valley. Is it right to use the "duck" theory = NO. If you are the "duck" that gets pulled over or questioned all the time. But ....THAT'S LIFE.....ASI ES LA VIDA.......LIVE WITH IT.

We have seen the consequences of "turning a blind eye". Just look at all the "red flags" that were never reported about the Muslim-American Army Major "shrink" who then went on a rampage killing "non-believer brothers and sisters-in-arms" at Fort Hood. His co-workers and superiors were too afraid of the consequences if they went against the ... Obama "code of diversity" in the Military. Their hard-earned careers would be compromised if they were deemed "anti-diversity" or "xenophobic" for smearing the reputation of fellow officer....merely because he was of a different religion. The same thinking helped the 9/11 perpetrators escape scrutiny by Law Enforcement, the FBI and other Government agencies and what was the result of thse new "diversity promotion campaign of the Democrat Congress and Obama Administration"..............3000 innocent American Citizens lost their lives and untold billions of dollars lost in a matter of a few hours.

    Leon,

As an Hispanic American, first generation if I recall correctly, you quack. And according to that, you are a duck. Good luck, Duckie! I'm happy to know you are living with it.

COPs are hired to protect 100% of the population, even those who are here illegally. Unless of course you are a Maricopa County Deputy Sheriff, then you are hired to protect your boss.

And Leon, 9-11 happened in 2001 on Bush 43's watch, not Obama watch! But thanks to Bush43/Cheney we were able to add to those 3,000 another almost 5,000 and a Trillion dollars which more than burried alive the losses of the Twin Towers, four jets and a wing of the Pentagon. And $1,000,000,000,000 is a heck of a lot to have to borrrow from China!

And recall that at Fort Hood, an unthinking staff of supervisors for Major Nadal Hassan saw to it that after having to treat soldiers returning from war with PTSD and a chip on their shoulder from their first encounter with Muslims who resented the American envasion of their homelands, he was placed on orders to go join that army of occupiers. Put yourself in Nadal's boots and figure it out. There is blame a plenty to go all around!

There is only one solution, and you just missed it. Last Sunday, you participated to some degree in celebrating a birthday. It's honored guest once preached, "Blessed are the peacemakers," and he was not talking about Colt 45's. Sorry Slabside! Learn to be a peacemaker, Leon.

Leon – that blind eye works both ways. Even the victims couldn't believe it could happen in Germany. Never take freedom for granted. When you accept the premise that the cops are here to protect the majority, not the minority, then you have the essence of discrimination. If the cops are so untrained and ignorant as you say, then, just like the Nazis, they are thugs.

Denise Da-Re….. I am sure that being naturalized as a citizen of the United States, under the constitution and the immigration law, was the proudest moment in his life.

That’s right, “Not a duck, but an eagle.”

But granting “amnesty” to legalize illegal aliens already here would tell those who became US citizens through naturalization for legal immigrants, and those who are waiting to come here legally, that they're idiots for doing things the right way. And it would reward people for their illegal actions.

Obama's administration is for “amnesty” . . . and without having to go through any congressional debate.

Mrs. Da-Re ... since you have been through the process of your husband's becoming an American citizen ... you more than most should resent those who laugh at Americas immigration laws and just walk on in and go to work without having done it the right way.

Doesn't make any difference which country they came from. Their nationality / ethnicity is not the problem. It is the fact that they refuse to follow our laws but want all the benefits of being here.

Considering how hard you and your husband worked to get his citizenship --- I would think you would be at the front of the protest lines against illegal immigrants.

    Willie,

Do you really think those coming north to pick lettuce are laughing at anything? And "refuse" is hardly the verb to pick to describe the desparate circumstances which send them hundreds of miles through parched deserts just to pick lettuce!

Yes, Willie, we all expect you to think that Denise and her husband would think like you, but apparently they do not![sad]
