The results of the Nov. 7 general election were certified Monday, which means a record-setting number of ballot measures will take effect.

Secretary of State Jan Brewer on Monday afternoon signed the official canvass of the election, which certified more than 1.5 million ballots cast throughout Arizona.

More than 60 percent of voters turned out to elect government officials and passed 12 of the 19 measures on the ballot.

“We had the most out of any state,” said Kevin Tyne, spokesman for the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office. “There were quite a large number of ballot measures.”

Most ballot measures will take effect after Gov. Janet Napolitano reviews the legislation and then declares the election results to be official. Napolitano will issue her proclamation by the end of the week, Tyne said.

Propositions 201, a statewide smoking ban, and Proposition 202, which increased the minimum wage, will go into effect next year. Proposition 204, which mandates the humane treatment of farm animals, will take effect in 2012.
