A security guard admitted Tuesday he placed his protective vest against a wall and fired two shots into it in a hoax intended to make it look like he was shot at a Mesa apartment complex.

Andrew Mark Grossman, 24, of Scottsdale was working as a guard with Elite Protective Services in Mesa when he told police Sept. 23 that two masked men shot him while he was on patrol at an apartment complex at 1803 N. Country Club Drive.

He said he fired back as they fled and might have struck one of them.

Mesa police detectives interviewed Grossman again Tuesday and gave him a voice stress test, which indicated he might be lying.

“I re-interviewed him and he told me he made the whole story up,” a detective wrote.

Grossman said he shot his own vest and then put it back on. He then fired three more shots into the ground while he keyed his radio’s talk button.

Responding officers found him nearby. He told the officers he thought he heard the assailants speaking Spanish as they fled.

Grossman’s hoax was uncovered just six days after a Queen Creek woman admitted falsely reporting a home invasion that sparked a massive manhunt and speculation it might be connected to the largest bank heist in Arizona history.

Aurora Lopez, 21, a Wells Fargo employee, gave a story that at first glance seemed to have similarities to a real bank robbery a week before in which robbers kidnapped a bank employee and his wife at their Chandler home and forced them to cooperate in the theft of $400.000.
