YUMA — People who visit the Colorado River near Yuma are trashing it big time.

Sheriff's deputies who patrol the waterway say people are leaving behind large amounts of trash.

Yuma authorities say they commonly see soda cans, beer cans and bottles. Other garbage found along the beach include a stroller, a bike and a folding chair.

Officers are seeing piles of trash from Laguna Dam to the Morelos Dam. Some of the trash sits next to trash cans.

Trashing the river can really get bad after a holiday.

After the July 4 weekend, authorities said the "river was riddled with cans."

Criminal littering is a misdemeanor, punishable by fines, jail or both.
