Former Higley Unified School District superintendent Joyce Lutrey is one of three finalists for superintendent of Cecil County Public Schools in Elkton, MD.

According to a release from the Maryland Association of Boards of Education, Lutrey was invited to visit the county, meet with stakeholders, and interview with the school board and local media on Monday.

The board initially received 14 applications from around the country, selected seven “highly qualified” candidates to interview, and then whittled the list to three finalists.

Cecil County Public Schools has 17 elementary schools, six middle schools and five high schools.

The Higley governing board granted Lutrey a one-year early release from her contract on Dec. 18. Since then, she has worked with interim Superintendent Denise Birdwell on various projects, although Birdwell has assumed the day-to-day operations of the superintendency.

Lutrey has been with Higley for about five years.

Her employment officially ends with the district on June 30.
