Local and federal officials launched an investigation Wednesday into the fire that destroyed a strip club on county land near the Scottsdale-Tempe border early Monday.
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms parked large command vans outside the charred black rubble at Fantasy Island, 963 E. Curry Road, and officials said the investigation will continue today.
Sheriff’s spokesman deputy Doug Matteson called the fire “suspicious” but would not say if authorities suspect arson.
Two workers discovered the fire inside a room, but when crews arrived there were already heavy flames leaping from the building. Firefighters battled the blaze for several hours.
Officials are guarding the scene 24 hours a day until the investigation is completed.
