Dispute delays opening of Chavez restaurant

The opening of the Hispanic-themed Mi Pueblo Supermercado at Main Street and Dobson Road in Mesa might be delayed six to eight weeks so its opening can be coordinated with other grocery stores the company plans to open in Phoenix, said Luis Granda, Mi Pueblo marketing manager.

"We are picking up three more locations in Phoenix, and we want them to all open within 30 days of each other," Granda said.

Mi Pueblo officials have hired a few employees for the Mesa store and are continuing to conduct interviews, he said.

They had previously planned to open the supermarket in late August.

Mesa City Councilman Dennis Kavanaugh said illness by the owner also might be a factor in the delay of the opening. But he said he is "hopeful" the project will go forward.

"They have made a substantial investment in the site, so they have an incentive to go ahead," he said. "Sometimes with medical situations, they are too optimistic about when they can come back and work full time."

The San Diego-based company has remodeled 65,000 square feet in a former Albertson's location for the upscale Hispanic grocery. The company has developed several specialty departments inside the store such as a taco shop, tortilleria (tortilla shop) and carniceria (meat department).
