Fire tore through a portable classroom used by a Mesa charter school late Sunday night.
Within minutes of emergency crews arriving at Mesa Arts Academy, 221 W. 6th Ave., orange-white flames were pouring out of a corner of the building. A pillar of smoke rose high into the cool, dark sky, occasionally illuminated by news helicopters’ spotlights capturing the 9 p.m. blaze.
Soon, fire was coming out of the roof, through a hole cut by firefighters. No one was reported inside the structure.
The portable classroom is located on the campus of the Grant Woods Branch of the East Valley Boys and Girls Clubs. Fire officials reported the facility housed some school records, and that as late as 9:30 p.m. they were battling the flames.
The cause of the fire and a damage estimate were not immediately available.
