The Arizona Department of Transportation is asking the U.S. Justice Department to close 22 of the state’s Motor Vehicle Division offices.

Arizona needs the federal clearance because the state is required to offer voter registration forms at all its MVD offices.

But some state lawmakers are worried because once the federal agency clears the request, the state could shut down the offices anytime and force thousands of residents to drive long distances for motor vehicle services.
