Former Phoenix Suns star Charles Barkley was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early Wednesday in downtown Scottsdale.

According to Lt. Eric Shuhandler, Gilbert police spokesman, Barkley was stopped for running a stop sign at 1:27 a.m. at Sixth Avenue and 75th Street by a Gilbert officer participating in the East Valley DUI Task Force.

Shuhandler said Gilbert Lt. Pete Smith smelled alcohol on Barkley, and the ex-Suns forward then performed poorly on a field sobriety test. Barkley did not allow the officer to perform a breathalyzer test at the scene, he said.

"They were able to establish probable cause for his arrest," Shuhandler said.

Barkley was taken to the DUI command center, where he consented to have blood drawn. Barkley's alcohol content will not be available for a few days, Shuhandler said.

"He was very cooperative and respectful," Shuhandler said.

Police impounded his 2005 Infiniti SUV and sent him home at 3 a.m. in a taxi after citing him for running the stop sign. Shuhandler said Barkley was given no special treatment.

Barkley played 16 NBA seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers, Phoenix Suns and Houston Rockets.
