A man is suspected of fatally shooting his estranged wife in the head Wednesday outside a church and then fleeing with their two young children, authorities said.

Daniel Paulo Parasca, 37, later dropped off one child at a hospital, where the 4-year-old girl was being treated for a gunshot wound to her knee, Phoenix police detective Stacie Derge said. The other child, a 3-year-old boy, was dropped off with family members 13 miles away at a home and is safe.

Parasca was still on the loose early Wednesday evening.

The victim was identified as Gabriela Parasca, 30. She was pronounced dead after being taken to John C. Lincoln Hospital from the church in west Phoenix.

The Parascas were married in Oradea, Romania, in 2002 and lived together in Peoria and Glendale, according to a divorce filing.

In August, Gabriela Parasca had taken out a restraining order against her husband.
