A Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy shot and injured a Queen Creek man Saturday night after the man refused to put his weapon down, the sheriff’s office reported Sunday.

The deputy was called about 11 p.m. Saturday to a family fight in the 35000 block of Happy Jack Road. When the first officer arrived, he was told Ryan Kelly, 31, was in the backyard with a weapon and had already fired a shot.

According to the sheriff’s report, “The deputy entered the backyard and ordered Kelly to drop his cocked weapon. When he refused, the deputy shot him.”

Kelly was taken by helicopter to Maricopa Medical Center. His injury was not life-threatening.

The deputy has been placed on paid leave until the investigation is completed. The case is being handled by the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
