A 30-year-old woman died after a motorcycle she was a passenger on struck a tarp on Interstate 10 near Riggs Road in Chandler late Sunday, according to the Department of Public Safety.

Maria Patena of Eloy died after the Harley-Davidson motorcycle driven by Donald Morris, 59, of Eloy, struck a tarp in the roadway about 7:45 p.m. The tarp became entangled in the rear wheel, according to DPS.

Morris then lost control of the motorcycle before it entered the center median of the highway, where it overturned.

Morris was injured and transported to a nearby hospital, according to DPS.

He was wearing a helmet, but it was not immediately known whether Patena was wearing a helmet, a DPS release stated.
