An 86-year-old man is in critical condition Maricopa County Medical Center’s burn unit after suffering life-threatening injuries during a fire inside his south Scottsdale residence this morning.

Scottsdale fire crews and police responded to a fire at Scottsdale Village Square assisted-living facility, 2620 N. 68th St., at about 3:20 a.m., when the man’s caregiver arrived at the residence and pulled him out of the fire, police said.

The unidentified caregiver was treated and released at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital for smoke inhalation injuries, police said.

The 86-year-old man, whose name has not been released, suffered severe burns to his upper body.

The cause of the fire appears to be related to a pipe the man was smoking, but a definite cause has not been determined, according to Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark.

No other injuries were reported, and the fire was contained to the elderly man’s residence, police said.
