Work has started on a 135,000-square-foot Catholic church at Williams Field and Park Crest roads in Gilbert.

Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, which is currently holding mass at Gateway Pointe Elementary School near Ray and Recker roads, will occupy a 16-acre site when construction ends on a first phase in less than a year.

Three-phases of construction are starting with a $4 million multipurpose building, where church parishioners will worship until the chapel is finished in the second phase, said Don Mellow, project manager with Mesa-based Caliente Construction.

Mellow said workers are currently preparing the site for construction.

“We’ve got about a 10-month duration,” he said.

Saint Mary Magdalene Catholic Church’s new facilities will include classroom space, a basketball gymnasium and outdoor ballfield.

Church officials were unavailable for comment Friday.

Greg Menegay, the church’s pastor, said on the church Web site that it’s taken a couple of years of fundraising to get this far.

“We’re very excited and were just very grateful to God for his blessings for getting us to this point,” he said.
