Much of northern and southeastern Arizona were under winter storm warnings on Christmas Day as the first of two powerful storms moved across the state.

The National Weather Service says as much as 6 inches of new snow had fallen in Flagstaff as of 11 a.m. Thursday and another 6 inches could accumulate overnight as the second storm moves into the area Christmas night and into Friday.

Rain was heavy at times in Phoenix at midday and expected to continue to fall into Friday.

The weather service says up to 3 inches of snow could fall in southern Gila County above 3,500 feet. Several inches are expected in the Globe and Miami area.

Meteorologists in Tucson say the storm will bring heavy snow to areas above 5,000 feet through Friday afternoon.

Travel in the state's higher elevations is discouraged, with snow and icy conditions reported in the Flagstaff area, although Interstate 40 is open. Similar conditions are reported in Show Low and higher elevation highways east of Globe.
