A 4-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound to his left forearm at his home in the 4600 block of East Redfield Road on Saturday, Gilbert police said Wednesday.
The child reportedly shot himself about 10 a.m. while playing with a handgun left on a coffee table, a police news release states. The child was taken to the hospital by his mother and aunt for treatment.
On Wednesday, Leonardo Mendivil, 24, of Gilbert, the boyfriend of the child’s mother, was booked on one count of endangerment, one count of prohibited possessor in possession of a firearm, and a felony Superior Court warrant, police said.
Mendivil fled the residence after the shooting, police said. Family members told police there were several guns inside the residence, of which Mendivil is the primary occupant.
On Wednesday, detectives identified Mendivil as the person who was in possession of the gun and who placed the gun on the coffee table. Mendivil was also found to have a current felony warrant.
Gilbert detectives located Mendivil at a Mesa apartment, where they conducted surveillance. Mendivil was followed by detectives to a gas station, where they attempted to arrest him; however, Mendivil refused to obey the officers’ commands. In an attempt to flee, Mendivil tried to run into the store while pulling a handgun out of his front pants pocket. A Taser was used and Mendivil was arrested, police said.
