The Arizona Department of Transportation closed Interstate 40 in both directions near Winslow around 3 p.m. Thursday. There were multiple vehicle crashes in the area and low visibility from heavy wind and blowing dust.

The interstate opened fully at 7:20 p.m. Thursday.

The Department of Public Safety was on the scene. Interstate 40 was closed westbound at milepost 253 and eastbound at milepost 249.

With the high winds Thursday, and more expected next week, DPS reminds drivers to pull off the freeway or highway when a dust storm approaches. When there is no visibility, motorists should pull off the road, turn off the lights, take their feet off the brakes and wait for the storm to pass. Always stay in the vehicle, DPS advises.
