An investigation into a fatal car-pedestrian accident clogged several Valley freeways during the morning rush hour. The victim, Byron Yellowhair, 24, was from Mesa, according to ABC15 News.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the victim apparently was walking to seek help after his vehicle broke down and he had parked it in the emergency lane of Interstate 10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

DPS Sgt. Ann Fitzgerald said they have no idea how many cars hit the man, but that it wouldn't surprise her if it was "up in the 20 to 40 range."

The accident occurred about 5 a.m. near 24th Street, near the Interstate 10-Interstate 17 split.

Westbound I-10 was closed for about four hours because of the investigation, which created massive backups not only on I-10 but other area freeways linked to I-10, as well as surface streets.
