A 26-year-old Mesa man went missing early Wednesday during a swim near Jupiter, Fla., police said

Mitchell McCarthy II was in the water about 1 a.m. when he was apparently pulled into the ocean by a rip current, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Scott Pascarella said. The man’s cousin went to a nearby house to call for help.

“For approximately four hours today, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office divers entered the water on the south side of the Jupiter Inlet and unfortunately did not find anything,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Teri Barbera said. “As of right now he is considered a missing person.”

Officers thought they heard the man screaming, but the water was too rough to reach him, authorities said.

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Coast Guard were using helicopters to search for the man.
