A woman accused of buying a gun for a man charged in connection with killing a Gilbert teen pleaded guilty Wednesday to misconduct involving weapons.

Mandi Smith bought a handgun for former convict Jonathan Burns, who is accused of using the weapon to kill 19-year-old Jackie Hartman of Gilbert. Burns is awaiting trial in the February rape and slaying of Hartman, whose body was found in the desert after weeks of searches.

Mike Anthony Scerbo, spokesman for the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, said no charges were dropped or reduced against Smith in exchange for the plea.

She faces a maximum of 3.75 years in prison when she is sentenced on July 11.

Smith admitted to buying the weapon for Burns, even though she knew he was not allowed to possess a firearm.
