Two women died following a three-car crash at the intersection of Hayden and Chaparral roads in Scottsdale Friday.

The intersection remains closed and has snarled traffic for several blocks.

The two were traveling eastbound on Chaparral Road in a Nissan sedan shortly after 2 p.m. when police said they ran a red light at Hayden and were struck by a pick-up truck traveling southbound.

The driver who was in the sedan, died upon impact, and her passenger was pronounced dead at 3:15 p.m. at Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital, according to police.

Both of their names were not released, pending the notification of relatives.

The driver of the truck was transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn with non-life threatening injuries. A third car attempting to turn from Hayden Road onto Chaparral also was struck by the Nissan after it collided with the truck, causing minor injuries to that driver, police said.

Minutes later, a Scottsdale police officer responding to the crash was injured in another accident at the intersection of Hayden and Camelback Road.

The cruiser was struck by a Buick sedan and both the officer and the driver of the Buick were transported to Scottsdale Healthcare Osborn hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.
