Emergency crews shut down Interstate 10 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday evening after a serious collision flipped two vehicles and sent several people to the hospital, according to authorities.
Officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said officers responded to the crash scene a little before 6 p.m. near Buckeye Road on the westbound side of the freeway.
Authorities immediately called for paramedics and began to assist at the scene, DPS Sgt. William Duff said.
The victims were expected to survive the crash, according to officials, but authorities thought it might take hours to clear up the freeway.
As of 7 p.m. , the westbound freeway was still closed, according to officials.
There was no estimate available late Saturday as to when the freeway was expected to reopen.
Reports on how many people were injured or the extent of their injuries were not immediately available late Saturday.
