Five junior varsity Mountain View High School football players are facing discipline after one of them was caught distributing prescription drugs to the others.
The incident got the attention of school employees on Thursday, said Kathy Bareiss, a spokeswoman for the Mesa Unified School District.
“(This) is a violation of school policy, and it would be a disciplinary action that ranges from suspension all the way up to expulsion,” Bareiss said.
Bareiss said she couldn’t say what discipline the students were given because of federal privacy laws, but that none of them were at school on Monday. For the same reason, Bareiss said she couldn’t disclose whether or not the teens would be able to continue playing football.
Mountain View’s principal notified the school resource officer of the incident. Mesa police spokeswoman Detective Diana Tapia said a report has not been taken yet.
Bareiss wouldn’t say what drug the students possessed, however, she did say it was not a narcotic. Also, she wouldn’t say if the drug was being sold or handed out free.
The penalty for a student who distributes a drug is either a long-term suspension or an expulsion, Bareiss said.
