An FBI agent is helping Gilbert police investigate a possible hate crime against an African-American woman this summer, a bureau spokeswoman said Monday.

The woman found a black Barbie doll hanging by its neck in her unlocked car outside her apartment in July, according to published reports.

If it turns out to be racially motivated, the FBI might recommend federal hate crime charges to the U.S. Department of Justice, said special agent Deborah McCarley. No suspects have been named.
