An off-duty Phoenix police officer involved in a scuffle in Tempe Friday morning was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, according to a Tempe spokeswoman.
Officer Benjamin Scarborough, 24, is suspected of punching and kicking a man when Tempe bicycle officers responded to a call at 2:11 a.m. near the corner of Fifth Street and Mill Avenue.
Ryan Lake, 28, was transported to a hospital with injuries to his face and head, said spokeswoman Cindy Davies.
Scarborough was arrested at the scene by Tempe police.
Sgt. Joel Tranter of Phoenix police said Scarborough will continue to be paid and will work either from home or at a desk in the department.
He will not work a regular beat while Tempe police conduct the criminal investigation for the case.
"We have to await the conclusions of the criminal investigation," Tranter said Saturday.
Scarborough will remain on leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation by the Phoenix Police Department, as well.
Investigators have not released any more details about the events leading up to the fight.
