John Kerry’s trip across America hits Arizona this weekend. After attending an American Indian festival in Gallup, N.M., the Democratic presidential nominee and his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, will board a train Sunday for Flagstaff.

En route, he will meet with Joe Shirley, president of the Navajo Nation, and other tribal leaders.

In Flagstaff, he will hold a rally at Heritage Square, tentatively set for about 9:15 p.m.

Attendance at the rally is by admission only. But tickets will be available at the Coconino County Democratic Party office at 4 S. San Francisco St.

Kerry will travel to the Grand Canyon the following morning. Kerry then will board a train for Kingman, where he will speak to a group at the train station before transferring to a bus for Las Vegas.

Gov. Janet Napolitano is expected to join the Kerrys for at least one leg of the trip. But as of late Wednesday, the specifics had not been worked out.

The Kerrys are on a 21-state "Believe in America Tour" following his nomination last week as the party’s standard bearer. The tour, which began in Boston, is slated to end in the Pacific Northwest.

Kerry’s trip comes days before President Bush will arrive in Phoenix for a campaign event.

Recent polls have shown Bush slightly ahead of Kerry in the race for Arizona’s 10 electoral votes, though the spread is within the margin of error for such surveys.
