A Tempe woman who told police she was nearly abducted earlier this week admitted Thursday that the story was a lie.

“I made it up,” Eva Dightmon, 47, told police.

Police said Dightmon would not say why she pretended that two men tried to abduct her Monday near McClintock Drive and Apache Boulevard. But authorities said she became defensive when investigators began finding holes in her story.

“We met with her and confronted her,” Tempe police spokesman Sgt. Mike Horn said. “She was somewhat defensive but acknowledged she made it up and wanted the whole thing dropped.”

Horn said the case will likely be submitted to the city prosecutor’s office for possible false reporting charges. False reporting is a misdemeanor.
