Phoenix police arrested a man suspected in the shooting Sunday of an officer.
Police arrested Jose Abel Cabrera, 35, an illegal immigrant from El Salvador, Sunday night at a Phoenix house where he lived with 10 others, according to detective Bob Ragsdale, Phoenix police spokesman.
He was booked on counts of attempted first-degree murder and misconduct involving weapons.
The officer, Bret Glidewell, stopped a Chevrolet S10 pickup truck at 5 p.m. Sunday for a traffic violation in the 3500 block of East Sweetwater Avenue.
Glidewell and the suspect exchanged gunfire after the officer saw the driver stick a pistol out the window. The officer, who was struck in his protective vest, was not injured but was taken to a hospital for observation.
Glidewell is the second Phoenix police officer to be shot by an illegal immigrant in the last month.
Officer Nick Erfle, 33, was fatally shot by Erik Jovani Martinez, 22, during a jaywalking stop in Sept. 18.
Police later shot and killed Martinez as he pointed a gun at a carjacking victim’s head.
