The Mesa Unified School District administration will present a proposed budget for the 2009-2010 school year during a governing board meeting Tuesday.

Arizona school districts are required to adopt a budget by July 15 even though the state has not adopted a fiscal budget. The Mesa board will likely approve the budget at its next meeting, July 14. Districts can revise the budget throughout the school year.

The district is still working through employee negotiations, which is called “meet and confer,” said Gerrick Monroe, the district’s assistant superintendent for business and support services.

“Once we have the state’s decisions we will sit down with our employee groups, share what we have available or not available, and settle on a direction for salary and benefits for next year,” Monroe said.

The budget may undergo its first revision as early as August, depending on when the Legislature and Gov. Jan Brewer finalize spending plans for Arizona.

Tuesday's governing board meeting is 5:30 p.m. at the district curriculum services center, 549 N. Stapley Drive.
